Postponements

Learn what postponement is and how you can postpone assessing your employees

Postponement allows you to delay the process of determining which employees should be enrolled in a pension scheme for up to three months. This delay can be applied to some or all of your employees. During this time, you are required to inform your employees in writing about the postponement and explain how automatic enrolment will apply to them.

Why You Might Postpone Employee Assessment

There are various reasons you might decide to postpone assessing employees for pension enrolment:

  • Seasonal or Temporary Employees: If you know certain employees will only be working for a short period (e.g., less than three months), you might choose to postpone their assessment.

  • Probationary Period: If employees are on probation and you need more time to assess their eligibility, postponement can provide the flexibility you need.

  • Administrative Reasons: If you're still setting up your pension scheme or other business processes, postponing the assessment can give you more time.

  • Other Business Reasons: You can postpone employee assessments for any reason that aligns with your business needs.

When Can You Postpone?

You can choose to postpone automatic enrolment from the following key dates:

  1. Your Duties Start Date

  2. The First Day of Employment for an Employee

  3. The Date When an Employee First Meets the Age and Earnings Criteria to be enrolled in the pension scheme.

However, if you decide to postpone on your duties start date, it only changes the day you assess your employees. It does not affect your duties start date or the deadline for your declaration of compliance. Additionally, postponement can only be applied if you are within six weeks of the date when an employee meets the criteria to be enrolled in the pension scheme.
