How to assess your team for auto-enrolment 

Getting this right matters. It keeps your client companies compliant, payroll running smoothly, and employees supported from day one. Here’s what to do. 

Who needs to be assessed? 

Everyone on the company's payroll. 

Auto-enrolment is a legal requirement, so you’ll need to assess each employee through your payroll software. It checks if they qualify based on: 

  • Age 
  • Earnings 
  • How often they’re paid 

Once the company has run the assessment, contributions from both the employer and employees start.

What does the assessment involve? 

It all kicks in when the company's scheme goes live. 

From the staging date, every employee is checked automatically. Here’s what happens: 

  • Anyone who’s eligible gets enrolled and starts contributing. 
  • Non-eligible employees can still choose to opt in. 

Once that’s done, just send us the company's updated Papdis file. We’ll handle the rest – including letting employees know what’s happening. 

What’s an individual assessment? 

Need to assess just one or two employees? A useful option for client companies with new joiners or non-standard payroll setups.

Individual assessments come in handy when: 

  • You’ve already uploaded most payroll data but the company has a new joiner. 
  • You’re running payroll manually and keeping things small. 

It’s a flexible option that’s great for growing teams or non-standard payroll setups. 

Can I assess everyone at once? 

Absolutely – and it’s usually the simplest way. 

Most companies: 

  • Use payroll software to assess all employees and calculate contributions. 
  • Send Thrive a file that already includes assessed contributions. 

Either way, it’s built to be smooth, simple and fully compliant.
